Introduction

We used to breathe pure and fresh air earlier. Unfortunately, due to industrialization and the concentration of poisonous gases in the environment, the air is becoming more and more toxic every day.

Many respiratory diseases are also caused by these gases. A major factor contributing to air pollution is the rapid increase in human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.

What is Air Pollution?

There are many types of air pollutants. Some are dangerous to humans while others cause less obvious problems. There are noxious gases, such as sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter, such as dust, soot, and liquids.

Most of the air pollution that we experience today comes from burning fossil fuels. Other sources include the overuse of fertilizer and livestock. Another type of pollution is referred to as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Causes of Air Pollution

Burning of Fossil Fuels: As a result of fossil fuel combustion, sulphur dioxide is emitted in large quantities. Fossil fuel incomplete combustion also releases carbon monoxide into the atmosphere.

Agricultural Activities: A range of hazardous gases are emitted during agricultural activities, including ammonia. Agricultural chemicals, insecticides, and pesticides pollute the atmosphere and emit harmful chemicals.

Automobiles: Vehicles such as jeeps, trucks, cars, buses, etc. emit pollutants into the atmosphere. In addition to being the main sources of greenhouse gases, these activities contribute to the spread of diseases.

Causes of Air Pollution

Factories and Industries: Industries and factories generate most of the carbon monoxide, organic compounds, and hydrocarbons. Air quality is degraded when these pollutants are released into the atmosphere.

Domestic Sources: Household cleaning products and paints release harmful chemicals into the air. In freshly painted walls, you can smell the chemicals contained in the paint. Pollution affects both the air and the respiratory system.

Where Occurs

Air pollution occurs in industrial areas, cities, towns, brick fields, mills and factories. It also occurs in natural devastating areas.

Bad Impacts of Air Pollution

Air pollution affects extremely to biological organisms. By inhaling and breathing polluted air, they fall victims to illness, anemia, pulmonary, disorder, deafness, severe psychological and psychosomatic diseases and hyperactivity.

Living beings feel suffocated and choked in polluted air. The consequence and result of air pollution is completely catastrophe. We are falling to the prey of new diseases and epidemics. Plants and trees are seriously extinct or destroyed for want of pure air supply.

Measures for Air Pollution

To check and control air pollution a few effective measures can be taken. The vehicles must be checked for pollution control. We should allow non-smoking vehicles on our roads and rivers. Industrial pollution must be compelled to blow within the premises of the industry only.

The other industrial units must follow it else they should be served legal notices for shutting down the plants. Air pollution controlling equipment must be manufactured, supplied and used in mills, factories and industries.

The technology for air pollution control should be developed. All firms should be compelled to use the equipment ensuring a complete control over air pollution. Polluting industries must be moved to a safer location away from cities.

Conclusion

Air pollution must be prevented lest the world should be unfit for living. With this end in view the Environmental Protection Act should be made, passed and implemented to make air free or pure from being polluted.

People should be made full of awareness of the bad-effects of air pollution. The conscious citizens must become fully alert to the menace of air pollution and join hands with govt. agencies for controlling it.
